Before we tell you how to master ‘Mindfulness’, it is important to understand what the term means

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the ability of being completely present in the moment. removing everything else from your mind and fully committing yourself to the task at hand. It helps you be free from distraction or judgment. and makes you aware of your thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them.

Not only does mindfulness develop your core personality and abilities to perform all tasks more efficiently, it makes you more in charge of your thoughts and emotions. It also makes you enjoy day to day routine activities that otherwise might seem monotonous. In teaching the mind to be present, we teach ourselves to be live more mindfully —in the present, taking a breath, not beholden to reactive thoughts and feelings —which are very helpful when faced with challenging circumstances or difficult situations.

Among the many ways of being more mindful, here are some easy day to day applications which might seem basic but can transform your life in the long run.

First Thing in the Morning

They say well begun is half done, and it couldn’t be truer in this case. Practicing mindfulness when you wake up sets the tone for the rest of your day. Pay more attention to brushing your teeth, showering and having breakfast. Involve all your senses of smell, sight, sound, taste and feel to these activities, and see the difference as you walk in to work.

Practice While You’re Waiting

Our lives are often fast paced, and today in situations that require us to be patient, we end up being frustrated. This is a good opportunity to be mindful of yourself. Focus on your breathing, inhale and exhale slowly. Soon you will feel refreshed and the fatigue caused to your mind by waiting will gradually reduce.

Set a Cue

Something that you come across every day, like a platform sign, mirror etc. can act as a good reminder for you to be mindful. Take in all the sights and sounds around you. You can also set an alarm on your phone which will switch your brain to being mindful, whenever it wanders off.

Keep it Short

Our brains respond better to bursts of mindfulness, so being mindful several times a day is more helpful than a lengthy session or even a weekend retreat. Start with 5 minutes a day. Pick a your favourite spot in your home and find a comfortable seat.

The art of mindfulness might seem easy but to master but like any other art it needs practice, focus and dedication. That’s why, at Indeayoga, we consider mindfulness as one of the key factors in your journey inwards.
